Treatment

Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) is a technique used to help patients make greater strength training gains during low intensity exercise, thereby reducing the overall stress placed on the limb. This exercise approach uses aerobic or resistance exercise performed while an Occlusion Cuff is slipped over an upper or lower limb and is applied to a particular muscle. Studies show that the use of blood flow restriction at rest, combined with aerobic training, or combined with low-load resistance training, can mitigate muscle atrophy and enhance strength responses. This treatment is helpful for athletes recovering from injuries like sprains, strains, and tendonitis, as well as patients needing post-operative physical therapy.

BFR training is currently being used by many collegiate and professional sports teams. It provides much of the gain, while avoiding too much of the strain.
